Best Bars in America

Nickel City, Austin, Texas

Nickel City has a bar that is partially padded with yellow vinyl in a way that made it seem like the owners had purposely made it that way to protect drunks after one too many shots. One of the great things about Nickel City is that it is both not that precious cocktail bar you’ve been trying to avoid or your dad’s favorite dive bar. This is Nickel City and its the place where you can happily order shot specials such as old Forester, Sombra mezcal and Fernet. It’s also the kind place where you can order one of the extremely delicious frozen hurricanes they sell. There’s a reason that drink is so popular at this joint. You will not be judged, even if you start drinking shots at 3pm in the afternoon.

Sugar House, Detroit

There is something truly special about an expertly executed daiquiri, don’t you think? Somewhere along that boozy sour-sweet intersection, daiquiris get the balance just right. When a bar sells it, therefore, for just seven bucks, it giving its proper pride of place. There is plenty more to discover at the Sugar House, which, as the name suggests, has a very run-fueled menu. As well as many commonplace cocktails made to perfection, there are also some of the bar’s own interesting concoctions.

Cocktails

Bibo Ergo Sum, Los Angeles

Wes Anderson fil

The moment you enter the strange corporate-plaza located Bibo Ergo Sum, you are already transported to planet weird. It really looks like something out of a Wes Anderson fil. Just as is with the decor, furnishings and layout, the cocktails themselves have this strange way of making you feel like you are drinking something that is both futuristic and old-fashioned. You really need to try the High Note when you visit here. It’s a drink consisting of coconut cream, toasted sesame tequila and Thai chili.

Ona, Lexington, Kentucky

Ona would be incredibly hard to find and you’d probably drive or walk on by it, if it weren’t for the small, but lively crowd huddled around the bar sign. This is one of those bars that you can slip in and out of darkened corners, to remain anonymous and invisible, until you need a refill. There are also interesting hanging baskets with plants covering all of the windows giving the room a very leafy terrarium feels. Brown liquor should be your drink of choice, as you are deep in Bluegrass State and the birthplace of bourbon.

Ordinaire, Oakland

Ordinaire is the perfect drinking hole for midday drifters and doubles as both a wine shop and a bar. When you rummage through the various bottles for sale, you will be drawn in further to the paperbacks placed between them, including the likes of Lolita, Out of Africa and A Clockwork Orange. It is strange, but also warm and friendly in an odd way, but satisfying nonetheless.
