Blake, thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day for this interview about your company, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
1. Blake, please tell us about BMG MEDIA Co.
BMG Media Co. was founded in 2009 after I graduated from Michigan State University. I established this company to help local network and business associates build out their brands, designs, and websites amidst the turmoil of our nation’s recession. BMG Media Co. quickly grew to become a successful business that has serviced over 1000 clients to date in multiple countries. Although we call Birmingham, MI home, we globally source all of our vendors and have satellite offices in multiple countries to service our clients 24/7.
Our sweet spot is custom web design, branding, and software development. We also excel at providing business automation, e-commerce solutions and mobile application development for startups and small, medium & large-size businesses. With our vast expertise in multiple industries, we understand what our clients need and craft the perfect solution. While other companies in our industry stick to stock templates that are fast and easy, we take a methodical, custom approach with the tools to scale your business on mobile and on the web.
2. How did you come up with the idea for BMG MEDIA?
I was asked to build a website for a family member. I used a template; it was do it yourself and pretty simple. Once it launched, I was bombarded with calls for people who needed websites. I realized I was getting over my head and there could be a business here, so I hired some great designers & developers and hit the ground running. 10 years later, we’re a team of 15 and working with some awesome clients around the globe.
3. What is the key to your company’s success?
Responsiveness, we respond to clients instantly and get work done quickly. Clients love it and it increases our work flow.
4. Many of our readers are just starting to build a company. What advice can you give entrepreneurs just starting out with a new venture?
Understand cash flow! Making money is great, but payment terms with companies could crush you when you are paying out of pocket for expenses.
5. For other entrepreneurs seeking to build a business as successful as yours, what advice can you give them when times get a little challenging?
Focus on what you know best & hustle, don’t diversify too much. There is always business out there, sometimes just takes some creativity to capture it.
6. How do you make sure your customers will become raving fans of your company?
Stay in contact with them, be transparent, personable and take their feedback constructively. You need to be confident in your abilities to perform, and when you show the client success & keep open channels of communication, you will never have an issue.
7. In today’s fast changing business environment, how do you stay abreast of things?
Industry news is key, you always want to make sure you are keeping up with today’s standards, and if you can see tomorrow’s new trends you are ahead of the game for your clients.
8. What is your “Why”? Why do you get up in the morning, and how do you keep yourself at peak performance to lead BMG MEDIA?
Why is simple, because I love it. Every day is a new problem to solve, and that keeps things fun and exciting. Since we deal with clients in all industries, we get a piece of everything – knowledge is power, and using those experiences allows us to continue to grow stronger.
9. Can you recommend a book that has had an influence in your career? How did it influence you?
Sadly, I wish I had more time to read books. My reading comes from short blog articles and industry news mostly. I follow the markets quite a bit, and love learning from other success stories.
10. What makes a great leader?
A great leader listens before he/she acts and looks at all angles. They are confident and can execute quickly. They make decisive decisions and are not afraid of making a mistake.
